The parliament’s majority leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, apologised to Fomena’s Member of Parliament (MP), Andrew Asiamah.

Speaking in an interview,  he said that the party regretted the expulsion of the Formena MP for a personal decision he made.

“the party has eaten a humble pie by extension of reasoning it comes to me.” he said

Prior to 7 December, following his decision not to contest the Fomena seat on the party’s ticket, Mr Asiamah was expelled from the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, the unjust treatment he received in the primaries when he lost affected his decision to go solo.

On the governing party’s side, by his conduct, Andrew Amoako Asiamah had forfeited his membership and that was ample grounds to withdraw him from the House pursuant to Article 97(1)(g) of the Constitution of 1992.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Article 97(1)(g) of the Constitution states that: A member of Parliament shall vacate his seat in Parliament if he leaves the party of which he was a member at the time of his election to Parliament to join another party or seeks to remain in Parliament as an independent member,” the NPP said

However, at the end of the polls, after 12,805 votes, Mr Asiamah was announced by the EC as the MP-elect for the Formena Constituency.

In response to a question by host Evans Mensah as to whether he is sorry about the expulsion, he indicated that “if the party is sorry and I am part of the party and so I am also sorry.”

Mr Mensah-Bonsu, reiterated that the NPP had misjudged the move but “if the party has now taken a decision to unwind it affects me.”
